Waitomo

The Waitomo Glowworm Caves offer a spectacular underground journey through limestone chambers and passages.

A galaxy of tiny lights will take your breath away. As you glide quietly beneath the lights of thousands of glowworms, it is only the sound of dripping water that reminds you that you are deep underground and not beneath a star filled sky.

The Waitomo Glowworm Caves were formed over 30 million years ago. Besides the glowworm caves, there are two more caves to visit in Waitomo, the Aranui Cave which is located in the Ruakuri Scenic Reserve and the Ruakuri Cave.

Ruakuri translated from the Maori language means ‘den of dogs’. This is the longest and most complex of all three tourist caves and offers some unusual features, including an ancient Maori burial ground and fossil shells that are over 30 million years old.
