Walks

In and around Hamilton, there are more than 50 fantastic options for walks, garden tours and other nature-based activities. A few of them are listed below with a short description. For more possibilities, maps and other details, please contact the Regional Information Centre

Te Araroa Walkway – This walkway is a vision of the Te Araroa Trust and many trampers. It is intended to be a trail that stretches from the top north to the bottom south of New Zealand. At the moment Te Araroa Walkway it is a patchwork of existing trails, potential trails over public land, roads and sections crossing private land. Walking from Coast to Coast is a bit much to do in a day or two, but a beautiful part of Te Araroa Walkway can be found west of Hamilton.

Waikato River Trail – At 3km in length the Waikato River Trail offers many spectacular views. Walkers should allow approximately 1 hour 20 minutes each way to truly appreciate the stunning scenery. The walk is easy from the Arapuni Dam with a steeper section near Jones Landing. You can also begin or end at Arapuni Village via the swing bridge. Follow the service road along the western side of the Hydro Power Station joining the Waikato River Trail by crossing the Arapuni Dam.

Kaimai

Mamaku Forest Park – The distinctive Kaimai ridgeline forms a mountain backdrop to the western Bay of Plenty. The rugged profile can be off-putting but the positive benefits are; the relatively low average height of 800 metres, dependable climate, luxuriant forests and plunging waterfalls. Plus a wide selection of short walks and multi-day tramps on 300 km of tracks. To explore this true Kiwi wilderness first obtain maps and brochures from visitor centres in Te Aroha or Matamata. From these towns, access roads run directly into the park to connect with well-marked tramping tracks. Day walks cover a wide variety of scenery.

Waitomo Walkway - The Waitomo Walkway starts at Waitomo Village, 16 kilometres northwest (by road) of Te Kuiti and passes throughs classic limestone landscape, meandering beside the Waitomo Stream through a mixture of shady forest and open farmland. The Walkway ends at Ruakuri Scenic Reserve, which contains a spectacular, 30-minute loop section of track. There are toilet and car parking facilities at both ends of the walkway.
